Over-fireplace TV mounting
TV OVER THE FIREPLACE? DONE PROPERLY.
Heat check first. Drill second.
Yes, I mount TVs above fireplaces. On a drywall surround it is a priced add-on of $79 on top of the standard install, and it includes a heat and height check before I drill. Brick, stone and stacked stone fireplaces get a custom quote. *Most standard jobs. Basic mount included. Specialty installations and additional work may cost extra. Final price confirmed before installation.
Step one
HOW HOT IS TOO HOT?
Heat is the first thing I check, because heat is what hurts TVs. A common guideline is that the wall where the TV hangs should stay under about 100°F with the fireplace running (HomeServe). If you cannot comfortably keep your hand on the wall, the TV belongs somewhere else.
A mantel helps by pushing rising heat away from the wall. Heat damage can also fall outside a TV’s warranty, so check your TV manual (Bob Vila).
Step two
HIGH TV, HAPPY NECK.
A TV above a fireplace always sits higher than ideal, so the goal is to keep it as low as the mantel and heat allow. The center of the screen at seated eye level is the usual target (Sanus), and over a fireplace you rarely get it. A tilt mount, included, angles the screen down toward the couch.
A deep mantel pushes the TV higher, because the screen has to clear it. Try the height calculator, then we settle the exact spot together before I drill.
Gas or wood, drywall or stone
WHAT IS YOUR FIREPLACE MADE OF?
The surround decides the price. A gas fireplace with a drywall surround over wood framing, common in a lot of newer homes around Summerville, is the priced add-on. Brick, stone and stacked stone fireplaces get a custom quote, because masonry needs different anchors and a closer look.
Wood-burning fireplaces can put out more heat and soot than gas, and they are usually surrounded by masonry, so they nearly always go the custom quote route. Send a photo with your request.
FIREPLACE ADD-ON VS CUSTOM QUOTE
Most drywall fireplace walls book online with the add-on. The add-on is $79 on top of the standard install, and it covers the heat and height check plus the extra care a fireplace wall needs. Anything in the right-hand list gets a custom quote first, so the price matches the job. *Most standard jobs. Basic mount included. Specialty installations and additional work may cost extra. Final price confirmed before installation.
Priced add-on
- Drywall surround over wood studs
- Gas fireplace, wall passes the heat check
- TV up to 75 inches, or 76 to 85 with the large TV add-on
- Basic tilt mount included
- Height agreed with you before drilling
Custom quote
- Brick, stone or stacked stone surrounds
- Pull-down or mantel mounts
- Hiding wires inside a fireplace wall
- TVs over 85 inches
Pull-down mounts lower the TV toward eye level when you want to watch. They are heavier and more involved, so they are always a custom quote.
FIREPLACE TV QUESTIONS
The questions people ask before they put a TV above a fireplace. The short version: it is usually fine on a drywall surround that passes the heat check, it will sit higher than a regular wall, and masonry gets a custom quote. More detail on the answers page. *Most standard jobs. Basic mount included. Specialty installations and additional work may cost extra. Final price confirmed before installation.
How much does it cost to mount a TV over a fireplace?
With THE HANGMAN, mounting over a fireplace with a drywall surround is the standard install of $229 plus an over-fireplace add-on of $79. Brick, stone and stacked stone fireplaces get a custom quote.
Is it safe to mount a TV above a fireplace?
It can be, if the wall stays cool enough. A common guideline is under about 100°F where the TV hangs. I check heat and height before drilling, and if the wall runs too hot, I will tell you to pick another spot.
How high should a TV be above a fireplace?
As low as the mantel and heat allow. The screen must clear the mantel, and a tilt mount angles it down toward your seat. We agree the exact height before I drill.
Can you mount a TV on a stone or brick fireplace?
Brick, stone and stacked stone fireplaces get a custom quote, because masonry needs different anchors and a closer look. Send a photo with a custom quote request.
Can you hide the wires above a fireplace?
Hiding wires inside a fireplace wall gets a custom quote, because the space behind a surround is not a normal stud bay. A paintable cord cover may be an option, and I will tell you what fits your wall.
Do you install pull-down fireplace mounts?
Pull-down and mantel mounts are a custom quote. They are heavier and more involved than a tilt mount, so I need to see the wall and the mount first.
